FIRE Focus Group Discussions

Building off the first round of the FIRE focus group discussions, the second round of the six sectoral events was held online between February and March 2022.

FIRE, the industry-led Forum for Innovation and Research in European Earth Observation, has the ambition to become the bridge between Earth Observation (EO) services and data and users across applications for different industries.

 

Cutting through a variety of six market sectors: agriculture, (wind) energy, infrastructure, marine, raw materials, and urban development, FIRE gathers different user communities to consult and establish a high-level roadmap. This will guide research & development, delivery and uptake of EO services in Europe.

The second round of FIRE Focus Group Discussions is a series of six expert meetups, one for each of the target market sectors: agriculture, (wind) energy, infrastructure, marine, raw materials, and urban development. The event series taking place between February and March 2022 builds up on the discussions and conclusions of the first focus group round in Autumn 2020 as well as the first FIRE Forum which took place on the 16th of June 2021. As during the first round, each of the focus groups is led by a leader from the sector: 

• COPA-COGECA for Agriculture

• WindEurope for Energy

• Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique for Marine

• Vital Infrastructure Arena for Infrastructure

• EIT Raw Materials for Raw materials

• SMURBS for Urban development

These discussions will contribute to the second FIRE Forum taking place in June 2022 and to the high-level roadmap for Research and Innovation strategy for Earth Observation in Europe.

  • When? The event series took place between February and March 2022.
  • Where? All focus group discussions were held online.
  • Why? The second round built upon the discussions and conclusions from the first focus group round in Autumn 2020 as well as the first FIRE Forum, which took place on the 16th of June 2021. As during the first round, each of the focus groups is led by a leader from the sector. These discussions contributed to both the second FIRE Forum taking place in June 2022 and the high-level roadmap for Research and Innovation strategy for Earth Observation in Europe.

The focus group approach

A diverse group of industry experts were confronted with an EO view on their sector and inspired with EO use cases to then engage in discussions. We collectively answered questions in the nature of:

  • What are actual user needs and challenges across the sector’s value chain?
  • What are expectations towards EO solutions to address these needs and challenges?
  • And what are barriers holding back the uptake of EO solutions in the sector?

The outcomes of these workshops will be delivered to the European Commission for inclusion in Horizon Europe planning, and they will also be returned to the commercial and EO sector via the European Association for Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC).

The Format

  • 15-20 participants from across six different sectors, including innovation, strategy, and/or technology management experts.
  • Three-hour programme, including inspirational sessions and facilitated discussions.
  • Virtual event, accessible from every part of the world.
